And I'm back with yet another episode of my podcast. Before we move ahead, let me thank each one of you for your listenership thus far. If you like my content, you can also choose to follow me on Instagram. My handle is @rajivedhavanofficial. That's Rajive Dhavan. Our this week's topic is how to get a promotion in five simple steps.

Well, they are not that simple, though. But yeah, these are the steps that will guarantee you a promotion or at least take you closer to one. It's time to have a word with me. Raif, I'll see you on the other side of this intro music.

Now, while I understand that getting a promotion is extremely important for each one of us, that coveted promotion is something that we all look forward to. It's something that we all work towards, and it is an aspiration that we've got, rightly so, but that should not define everything else in our lives.

Promotion is just an aspiration for your professional life, and the reason for that is simple. While in this podcast, I'll share five steps that'll take you closer to a promotion. There'll always be other influential factors beyond anybody's control. Also, if there are 10, or 15 people working in a team, only two or three actually will be eligible for a promotion, and maybe one might end up getting a promotion.

So it's important that we understand not to tie everything in our life to a promotion. There's life beyond a promotion too. Now that this disclaimer is out of our way let's jump in. Here are five steps that we'll talk about in this podcast. Dedication, Dependability. Proactive, Promote and Politics. Let's start with dedication.

No senior or leader wants to promote someone who's not dedicated, so while dedication will give you a lot of perks in your career, getting closer to a promotion is certainly one of them. Yeah, sometimes you'll not see instant results, so you'll need to be patient with that. I do agree that there are exceptions to this.

Sometimes less competent people end up climbing the corporate ladder, and that's because of how they handle the politics around them. But that shouldn't be the focus for you. And that's because those who climb the corporate ladder only on the basis of politics, they'll spend their entire life in people pleasing.

And that is one hell of a toxic role to play for that long. Next on the list is dependability. It's so important that you're dependable as a person, as a team player. Every senior or leader would want to know that the person they've promoted will fill in for them whenever it counts. They will want to look at someone who strikes when everyone else fails, someone they don't need to worry much about.

And this dependability you'll need to earn it with. It's not something that will be given to you on a platter. Before we move ahead to our next step, let me also tell you that the idea behind this podcast is to help you get a promotion, which is solid, which is what they call weatherproof, and that promotion can be built only on the foundation of following these steps, along with having great skillset.

So remember that it's not just these steps that we have to follow. We'll also have to focus a lot on our skillset and on upskilling ourselves. Time to time. Let's move to the next step. The next step is called being proactive. Now, if you're someone who needs to be constantly reminded about their tasks, constantly told what needs to be done, You can be sure about the fact that you are far from a promotion.

You're far from handling a team; you're far from leadership. As we climb up the ladder, we know that we are moving closer towards more concrete leadership roles, and these roles demand you to be proactive, generate ideas from your end, also execute them and make a positive, measurable. The next step is to promote, promote your work.

By this, I mean self-promotion. Contrary to popular belief, self-promotion is not bragging. In fact, it's extremely important in today's market conditions. When there's so much noise around us, it'll help us stand out and get noticed. So it's important that you talk about things that you've been doing, the impact that you've been creating.

Popularity is another factor that plays a crucial role in you getting that promotion, and most people who stand out are generally popular. So yeah, let's own our achievement. Let's own them with pride. We don't need to be shy about it. We must, however, be mindful that in this run-up to promote our achievements, we don't undermine what someone else has achieved.

That's the only thing that matters. The last step is politics. Yes, it's time to address the elephant in the room. Let's face it, we all know that there's politics in every organization. If there are human beings, there will be politics too. Sometimes politics can be healthy or mild, but in larger organizations, it can be toxic too.

Getting a promotion also depends on how one deals with politics at the workplace. It'll not help to live in denial that there's no politics. Being popular is important to tackle politics, but one of the underlying currents of politics is power. So you'll need to be careful that you don't come across as overqualified or overpowering.

You'll need to blend in seamlessly with the people around you without making them feel that you could be a threat to them. This one's tough because the moment you're popular or overqualified, you'll end up with a lot of haters or those who want you to fail. You could be the most qualified person in the room, but if you don't know how to handle the politics at your workplace, you're less likely to get a promotion.

There can be a separate episode on how to handle office politics, and I'll surely work on that. It's a tough subject but a very relevant one, and it has too many moving parts to cover here, so I do hope that you get a broader picture, at least, of what needs to be done. If you're interested in me doing up another episode on just the Politics at Workplace, please do right to me on my social channels, and I'll certainly do it.
